India in despair as Olympic wrestler disqualified from final despite cutting hair off

India’s Olympic team was hit with heartbreak when Vinesh Phogat, one of their top wrestlers, was disqualified just hours before her gold medal match for exceeding the 50kg weight limit by 100 grams. Despite desperate attempts, including cutting her hair, Phogat couldn’t make the weight. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, calling Phogat a "champion among champions" and praising her resilience. The Wrestling Federation of India has filed an appeal, and the nation stands firmly behind Phogat during this challenging time.

Prime Minister's Support and Reactions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to express his "despair" over the situation. He referred to Phogat as a "champion among champions" and "India's pride." Modi acknowledged the setback, emphasizing Phogat's resilience and determination. He encouraged her to come back stronger, stating, "We are all rooting for you."

The Weight Cut Struggle

Phogat was initially within the designated weight before her three fights on Tuesday but had to be tested again on Wednesday morning. To lose the extra weight, she resorted to running, skipping, and even cutting her hair. Despite these efforts, she was still 100 grams over the limit.

Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, India's chief medical officer, explained that wrestlers often compete in weight categories below their natural weight to gain an advantage. Phogat's nutritionist had calculated the weight cut to be 1.5 kg, but a rebound weight gain and the need for hydration after her bouts led to the slight excess.

Medical Measures and Assurance

Following the disqualification, Phogat was given IV fluids to prevent dehydration. Dr. Pardiwala assured that all of Phogat's medical parameters were normal and that she felt well throughout the process. Blood tests were also conducted to ensure her overall health.

Phogat's Journey and Achievements

Phogat, known as the Lioness of India, had already made a significant impact by defeating the top seed Yui Susaki in the opening round. Her victory had reduced Japanese journalists to tears. Phogat's reputation in her home country was immense, and she had previously protested against sexual allegations within her sport by sleeping on the streets of New Delhi.

Support from Indian Olympic Association

PT Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association, expressed shock and disappointment at Phogat's disqualification. She met with Phogat at the Olympic Village and assured her of the complete support of the Indian Olympic Association, the government, and the entire country. The Wrestling Federation of India filed an appeal to reconsider the decision, and the Indian Olympic Association is pursuing it vigorously.

Phogat's journey at the Paris Olympic Games 2024 has been a rollercoaster of emotions. Despite the setback, her determination and the support of her country highlight her indomitable spirit and the pride she brings to India.
